Breast cancer and treatment impacts on muscle strength

All patients with breast cancer or post treatment should perform at least two resistance training sessions per week to maintain muscle mass, strength and physical function.

As expected these authors report that women who have undergone breast cancer treatment have lower muscle strength compared to matched controls. But interestingly, they also reports that aromatase inhibitor therapy might have a greater negative impact on muscle strength compared to tamoxifen. There were also differential effects of different types of surgery. Finally, different muscle groups were affected to varying degrees.

These findings emphasize the importance of assessing strength in the major functional movements to determine relative weakness to target with tailored exercise prescription.
